Some of you may have heard that one of the groups of academics who were studying EDL has finally published a book on them. He was studying them between 2011 and 2012. It's taken so long for this book to be published (at the end of 2015), I'd assume he was fake, and the people who told me they'd been interviewed by him had been scammed.

As you might expect, the book is from a hostile perspective. I spoke with someone who was interviewed and she didn't seem to think it was hostile, and others didn't seem to think so either (as she reported it to me).

But you can judge for yourselves.

How could an academic, supposedly pursuing "participant observation" (i.e. unbiased and involved observation) spend 2 years going to meetings, demos and travelling with EDL, and designate them "an anti-muslim group"? This title might as well have come from UAF or HNH or Hizb ut Tahrir or IHRC. IMO those who got to know this academic are so pleased an academic book has been written on EDL, they have blinded themselves to the fact that it is a hideously biased view on them. I got to know some of the real stalwarts of EDL (people whose own children had been scarred for life by muslim attacks), and I found it very humbling, how these rough people could be the very embodiment of (christian) forgiveness (they weren't practicing christians, AFAIK). And then to see such kind, forgiving people be so badly mischaracterised makes my blood boil.

I'm just glad this book costs £90 and so almost no-one will buy it. When I heard of these academics, I knew they would either write an honest account of EDL and never get it published, or they'd stick the knife in and advance their careers.

I'm looking to borrow a copy of this book, and see if my view of the 1st chapter is borne out by the rest of the book.
Indeed. The divergence betwe…tag:4freedoms.com,2015-08-25:3766518:Comment:1702192015-08-25T10:01:04.409ZJoehttp://4freedoms.com/profile/38DD

An exhibition of cartoons of the Prophet Mohamed in London has been cancelled after its organiser, a former Ukip candidate who runs Sharia Watch UK, decided it was too dangerous.

The exhibition had been due to be addressed by Geert Wilders, the far-right Dutch politician who has previously described Mohamed as “the devil” and claimed the Koran is a “fascist book” that should be banned.

Depicting images of the Prophet is insulting to many Muslims and this has been used as a justification for violence by extreme Islamists in the past.

However, an anti-Islamophobia group said that Mr Wilders’ invitation to speak at the exhibition, which was planned for September, showed it was more about inflaming tension than defending free speech.

Writing on Sharia Watch UK’s website, the exhibition’s organiser Anne Marie Waters said that she had decided there was a “very real possibility that people could be hurt or killed – before, during, and after the event”.

“Over the last few weeks, I have had several conversations with both Scotland Yard and counter-terror detectives. My conclusion? That the risk of running this exhibition is simply too high,” she said.

“When setting out to do something like this, one has to be prepared for the possibility of threats, or even violence, but it’s easy to underestimate the impact such things will have on the people around you.”

She also said that the venue for the exhibition – which had been kept secret – had pulled out “citing security and insurance concerns”.

“Given the fear that people were feeling generally, the only responsible thing to do was to pull back and try to learn some lessons,” Ms Waters said. “I have not learnt lessons as much as I have had my suspicions confirmed.

Mr Wilders was banned from entering the UK in 2009 with the then Home Secretary Jacqui Smith labelling him an “undesirable person” following his comments about Islam. Despite that he flew to Heathrow, but was deported back to the Netherlands. The ban was overturned later in the year.

Speaking to The Independent last month, Fiyaz Mughal, director of the anti-Islamophobia group Tell Mama, said the exhibition was “not about free speech” as billed, but was simply designed to “irritate and inflame”.

“Inviting a man who is currently awaiting trial for racial hatred after vowing to make sure there were ‘fewer Moroccans’ in Holland is hardly the poster boy any sane or reasonable campaign wants to have as their keynote speaker,” he said.

“Let us not be fooled that this is about testing the boundaries of free speech. If they wanted that, they would do it without people like Wilders and that says it all.”

Ms Waters stood as the Ukip candidate in Lewisham East in May’s general election, coming third with 9.1 per cent of the vote.

Attempted murder of Sikh EDL supporter by muslims?

http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/edl-victim-hit-run-crash-7134083

Police are investigating claims that an alleged hit-and-run driver targeted a group of men outside a pub because they were members of the right-wing English Defence League.

A Ford Focus car was driven through the 15-strong crowd outside a Wolverhampton pub severely injuring one man.

The Sunday Mercury understands the 40-year-old Asian victim is a leading member of the EDL’s controversial Sikh Division.

Social media messages on EDL websites were full of praise for Jag Singh, from Wolverhampton, who suffered spinal injuries and a broken leg.

Mr Singh is a long-standing EDL supporter and regularly attends the extremist group’s demos and meetings up and down the country, EDL monitoring sites have claimed.

The turban-wearing father is lauded by the EDL as proof that it is not racist and instead is only opposed to Islamic extremists.

A spokesman from monitoring site EDL Extra, said: “The EDL have somehow managed to hoodwink some Sikhs into joining them and created a so-called Sikh division.

“The EDL play on the historical animosity that exists between some sections of the Sikh and Muslim community.

“Jag Singh is a popular figure in the EDL and the poster boy for their so-called non-racist outlook.

“No doubt the EDL will use this incident to portray themselves as victims.”

About 15 EDL supporters had gathered outside the Rookery Tavern pub in Wood Street, Wolverhampton, on Sunday May 4, a popular drinking and meeting spot for the group.

An argument broke out between some pub-goers which spilled out into the street.

Police say a red Ford Focus car then turned up and drove straight at a group of up to 15 men before injuring another man as it reversed out.

A witness described how bodies were flung across the bonnet as the driver aimed for the thickest part of the group.

He said: “It’s a miracle that no-one was killed or more seriously hurt because the car was driving at some speed and its wheels were screeching.

“I didn’t get a clear view but I could hear and see people being struck and tumbling over the car bonnet like skittles.

“There was a lot of confusion and shouting and some of the men tried to smash the car’s windscreen when it stopped.

“But the driver just reversed out again and hit somebody else before wheel-spinning away.”

He added: “There were women and a few youths stood in that group and it’s just pure luck that there wasn’t more bloodshed.

“People were just stood in shock.”

Detective Inspector Jim Munro from West Midlands Police Force CID said: “It is believed the vehicle, a red Ford Focus car V358 KOF, although this could have been changed, deliberately drove into the group outside the pub following a disorder.

“We are carrying out forensic investigations at the scene and house to house enquiries and have local reassurance patrols in place.

“We are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area or who has information to contact police.”

Detectives have arrested two people. A 47-year-old man was detained shortly afterwards while a 26-year-old man was arrested days later on suspicion of conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm.

Both have been bailed pending further inquiries.

After she delivered a great speech and interview at the Grantham demonstration, we asked EDL supporter Naomi-Anne how she became involved with Britain’s largest anti-extremism street protest movement and what she believes the EDL’s attitude is to the question of race.

Who are you?

My name is Naomi-Anne.

Which is your EDL Division?

I’m a member of the Skegness Division, lived here for six months but moved from Sleaford.

How did you come to be involved with the EDL?

I joined the EDL after seeing a street protest in Luton headed by Tommy Robinson on the news.

How would you describe your attitude towards Islam?

I have been studying Islam for most of my life due to my Dad’s side of the family being Muslim. I was very concerned about women’s role within the religion and after the terrorist attacks in New York and London I began to want to know more about the so-called “Religion of Peace.”

So what did you do?

[I] started with reading the Koran, The Sunnah and the Hadith, I felt the only way to truly dissemble Islam was to learn more about it. As I got more involved in the anti-islamic movement in University; I began to attend meetings headed by Islamic apologists such as Abdur Raheem Green and voicing my opinions much to the distaste of the Muslims around me which drew me to the attention of leftist groups in my area such as the then young Muslim Defence League and Antifa.

And this led you to the EDL?

After a barrage of nasty comments and racial slurs I began looking closer at the EDL and after meeting members and finding out that they were not “racist drunken football hooligans” as portrayed in the media I began to attend demos. My best friend [name removed] is a member of the Skegness division and after meeting the members I began attending demos.

Do you feel that you’ve been made welcome?

Of course I’ve always been made to feel welcome! I’m not a pushover and I always trust my gut. On my first demo I was sat in the pub with fellow patriots and told them all straight out: “If you have something to say or any problem with me then get it out of your system because I’m not one for back stabbing; there’s enough of that in government!”

How did that go down!?

Well, I got a sea of confused faces and was told “We don’t care what colour you are! You’re English first!” After that I sat, chatted, laughed and drank with them and never thought about it again. I always make it a point of pointing out to people that I have more abuse and comments from the left about my colour than anyone else. In my eyes it’s them with the problem, not the EDL.

Is your race important to you?

I’m very proud of being mixed race. I come from a really diverse mixture of different ethnicities and cultures having family and roots in Holland, Africa, Brazil, Cuba, Ireland, England, Dominica and the United States. I’m proud of my roots and where I come from but my identity is not in my race (or races!) my identity comes from my experiences, my friends and family and of course my country.

Do you feel under pressure to identify yourself as ‘black’ or ‘mixed race’?

I have always been told to identify with one race, I should be a proud black girl, or a proud African or a proud Dominican and I felt I was being pushed to forget my white family members. I’m not one for being on the fence, I’m not one or the other but all of these things and it upsets me that I have to choose to be just one or the other. I am extremely proud of every single root in my very large and extensive family tree!

We heard you speak at the Grantham demonstration. Was this your first time?

Yes. I was so nervous before I got up, but as soon as I had the microphone in my hand and heard the encouraging shouts it was like a shot of Red Bull! I loved it, I will do as many speeches as I possibly can, wherever I can and wherever I am given the honour.
