Jennifer – not her real name – tells the Sunday Mirror for the first time how she was raped by over 500 men from the age off 11 – yet she is the one left with a criminal record.

She was gang raped, often in her school uniform, trafficked and held at gunpoint. Her nightmare left her so broken she attempted suicide.

At just 16, she feared for her life as one rapist battered her and shoved gravel in her mouth to silence her cries.

For four years, until she was 19, she fell under the control of a man who hawked her around like a piece of meat.

Jennifer claims police refused to intervene and repeatedly arrested her for prostitution from the age of 16 to 19, despite her plea she was being exploited.

Yet not one of her abusers has been brought to justice despite multiple reports to police. Jennifer says: “I must have been raped by more than 500 men.

"When I told the police, they told me I’d chosen my lifestyle. I asked to make a statement because I’d been raped and beaten by so many men and I wanted it to stop.

"An officer said, ‘You’re a common prostitute. Don’t you think that comes with the job?’ He said a jury would never believe I was a victim of abuse.

“Instead, I ended up in the dock. I starved so I had money for the court fines because I was terrified of going to jail. I was basically paying to be raped.”

Jennifer paints a picture of an unbearable childhood. She missed school from 14 to 16 as she was being violated and beaten by up to 10 men a night.

She says: “I thought the only way out was death because I’d gone to the police and they didn’t want to help me. My life was a living hell, I felt so alone. When I took an overdose, the ambulance driver refused to go home because I was on my own. She sat at my bedside, crying.”

A Sunday Mirror probe last year revealed up to 1,000 Telford girls could have been sexually exploited over four decades. Jennifer is set to give evidence to the ongoing public inquiry called as a result of our probe.

Her hell began when she moved to the Shropshire town in the late 1980s.

Finally, in the mid-90s, she fled to a relative’s home hundreds of miles away. Jennifer tells the Sunday Mirror: “I know it wasn’t my fault, but I feel guilty about girls who were abused. I wonder if they’d have been saved if I’d been taken seriously when I told police.

“I moved to Telford aged 11 and was desperate to fit in with other girls, who had boyfriends. I met a lad my age, but he introduced me to his older cousin and everything spiralled from there. His friends started gang raping me.”

Jennifer, now a mum in her 40s, skipped school for two years. A social worker visited her but she says barely any questions were asked about what was going on in her life.

She tried to return to class but claims a teacher told her she was wasting her time because she’d missed so many lessons. Jennifer adds bleakly: “I walked straight out of the gates and never went back. From that point, no one asked a single question.”

The teenager was then targeted by an older man who would control her for the next four years. She says: “He pretended to be my boyfriend, but it was a typical grooming scenario. Soon, he’d put me on the streets.”

Jennifer says the man was known to police for sex trafficking and her mum told officers she was in his clutches.

But she says the abuser was still able to drive her around the country, forcing her into sex with other men.

Jennifer goes on: “I was driven to a town in the Midlands and made to watch as an older girl was sold for sex. I was in my school skirt and cardigan. The first time I was arrested was shortly afterwards, in the same town. I told police I was from Telford and no one questioned why I was miles from home in the middle of the night.”

Many Telford victims say most of their abusers were from the Pakistani community but Jennifer says she was sold to anyone willing to pay.

She was so terrified of one man she jumped out of a moving car as he attacked. Then another abuser left her in utter terror. Jennifer says: “One man dragged me into an industrial estate to rape and beat me. I screamed, pray-ing someone could hear me. I thought he was going to kill me. There was a light on in a cellar and I was convinced that was where he’d dump my body.

“He picked up a handful of gravel and stuffed my mouth with it and held my nose so I would be quiet. I said, ‘Are you going to kill me? My mum will report me as a missing person’. Somehow, it made him stop.”

Jennifer says if she refused to obey orders she would be battered by the man who was controlling her. He beat her so badly that she choked on her own blood – then he told her she would have to pay for a new carpet.

She adds: “He also locked me in a flat with iron bars, for three or four days. I was told the police thought I’d been abducted but they did nothing.”

Jennifer says she went to police soon after she turned 17. But she claims: “I was told to have a good think about how I’d look in court. I knew then no one would believe me.”

There was little support for Jennifer at home. She says: “My mum didn’t understand what was going on and she believed it was my fault. After going to the police once, she kept quiet, which was the wrong thing to do because my abusers thrived on her silence. She was embarrassed and ashamed. Our relationship has never recovered.”

Records seen by the Sunday Mirror show Jennifer was convicted 52 times and fined heavily by the time she was 19 after being sold for sex.

Her trafficker was held in custody for four months on suspicion of a gang rape. But the case collapsed and he turned up at her door with a shotgun.

She says: “I told him I was pregnant by another man and he didn’t attack me that day. But he was furious I wouldn’t have an abortion and that’s when I overdosed.”

Jennifer pulled through but decided to have a termination. She finally broke free by fleeing Telford for ever.

She slowly rebuilt her life, had children and graduated from university.

When she read about mass abuse of Telford girls in the Sunday Mirror, she asked police to look at her case again, but was told her they wouldn’t have enough evidence to prosecute.

But she has been identified by a national scheme aimed at rooting out human trafficking and hopes this will lead to offenders being punished. West Mercia Police said Jennifer’s case collapsed as officers were unable to identify offenders – but promised a thorough investigation “if more information were to come to light”. The first complaint Jennifer made aged 17 was to an officer from West Midlands Police. The force said it did not have a record of the complaint but insisted all allegations of historic sex abuse would be taken seriously.

When Western European countries opened the floodgates a few years ago to allow in hordes of migrants, they did not bother checking the ages of these so-called "refugees."

In fact, most of them allowed the fake refugees to "identify" as whatever fake age they wanted, in the process allowing many grown men to be placed in the company of children, with disastrous results.

Now it looks like one of these migrants may have infiltrated a kids play center in the UK by pretending to be a toddler and then savagely attacking a 17-month-old girl, scarring her for life.

As reported by the Daily Mirror:

A toddler was scarred for life after being bitten more than 15 times by kids at a soft play centre. Seventeen-month-old Willow-Ivy Doherty suffered the “nightmare” during a day out with her mum Becky, brother Tucker, six, and sister Aurora, three. Becky, 33, said: “She looks like she’s been savaged by a dog, not a child.”

The single mum of six took her three youngest to Little Bees in Seacroft, Leeds, and sat watching from a table overlooking the indoor play area. She was looking at Aurora when she heard another mum scream: “Oh my God, whose baby is this?”

She said: “She had pulled the boy off Willow. He had hold of her neck.” Becky raced over to find Willow-Ivy blue and not breathing and the boy standing “with a big smile on his face, with blood all around his mouth”.

She said she shouted “where is your mum?” but the boy’s mother did not come forward until staff were giving Willow-Ivy first aid...Becky said: “She kept shouting ‘That’s what kids do, that’s what kids do!’ over and over.”

Becky took Willow-Ivy to hospital where she was given injections for Hepatitis B and treatment for her cuts. She suffered four to her face, two to her fingers, three to her back, several to her head, one to her ear, one to her shoulder, one to her wrist and one to her leg.

A spokesperson for the soft play facility said that parents should supervise their own children. The owner of Little Bees, who did not wish to be named, confirmed that she helped Willow-Ivy but said: “We are not a nursery. The children need parental supervision.”

As usual what is missing from this story is a picture of the attacker. Given past mistakes it is entirely possible that he was in fact an adult and may have simply lied about his age to gain access to small, vulnerable children for his own sexually perverted reasons.

Meanwhile, to have noticed this before the attack took place would probably have got you labelled a "racist" in Britcuckistan.
It’s been six months since the #MeToo movement first took off. For half a year now we’ve had a regular drip-feed of stories drawing attention to the apparent suffering of women at the hands of men. So when this weekend’s Sunday Mirror revealed the shocking abuse experienced by hundreds of women and girls in Telford we might have expected the outrage to find a new focus. The news that girls, some as young as 11, were drugged, beaten and raped by gangs of mainly Muslim, Asian-heritage men could have provided further fuel to campaigners. We might have expected shows of solidarity, reminders of the importance of believing the victim, and offers of financial support.

But no. The abuse in Telford is estimated to have involved over 1,000 girls stretching over 40 years. Young girls in the town were groomed, fed drugs and raped. They were passed between abusers like commodities. Some got pregnant, had abortions and were raped again on multiple occasions. Three women were murdered and two others died in tragedies linked to the abuse. Yet these shocking events have received relatively little coverage. Girls in Telford do not, it seems, deserve frontpage coverage in the Guardian or The Times.

The very same newspapers that covered, at length and over many days, news that Kate Maltby’s knee may or may not have been touched by Damian Green or that Michael Fallon attempted to kiss Jane Merrick, were unable to muster up the same level of outrage for young women in Telford.

The lack of comment on the Telford abuse scandal exposes the hypocrisy at the heart of the #MeToo movement. High-profile campaigners announce time and again that they are not driven by self-interest, but from a desire to help women less fortunate than themselves. Jane Merrick told all because, ‘I knew that by failing to act I was letting down not only my 29-year-old self, but also any other women who may have been subjected to the same behaviour since. More importantly, I would be failing to protect other women in future.’ Kate Maltby made a similar declaration: ‘It is true that I have many privileges that other women do not. That is why I owed it to others to come forward. When we see white, financially secure women saying #MeToo, we should ask: where are the voices that we are not hearing?’ Yet Merrick and Maltby, for all their self-sacrifice and sisterly compassion, have so far had nothing to say about the rape of teenage girls in Telford.

Time’s Up, the celebrity #MeToo spin-off, launched a fundraiser to pay legal fees for victims of sexual harassment and assault seeking justice. The aim, it said, was to ‘lift up the voices, power and strength of women working in low-wage industries where the lack of financial stability makes them vulnerable to high rates of gender-based violence and exploitation’. More than $16.7million was raised in less than a month. The British actress Emma Watson, one of the most generous and high-profile donors, posted on social media: ‘The clock’s been ticking on the abuse of power. I stand in solidarity with women across every industry to say #TIMESUP on abuse, harassment, and assault. #TIMESUP on oppression and marginalisation.’ Only, it seems, some women are more deserving of solidarity than others; some women’s voices are more worthy of being lifted up.

So why have there been no outpourings of sympathy or expressions of outrage for the girls of Telford? Why aren’t actors being photographed walking round Telford in their expensive black gowns? Why aren’t more journalists abandoning lengthy lunches to give voice to the girls in Telford?

Perhaps the women of Telford are simply the wrong kind of victim. #MeToo prefers its victims to be posh. Jane Merrick was lunching in an expensive Westminster restaurant when Fallon attempted to kiss her. Kate Maltby’s wealthy and well-connected family has not held her career back. The glamorous celebrities who adorned the cover of Time magazine and were praised for being ‘silence-breakers’ wore dresses costing more than the average annual salary of a Telford resident.

Or perhaps the Asian men accused of grooming, rape, drug-dealing, murder and paedophilia are simply the wrong kind of perpetrator. #MeToo prefers the accused to be powerful white men: think Harvey Weinstein or Conservative cabinet ministers. That abuse might have been carried out by Muslim men disturbs the carefully constructed, intersectional hierarchy and disrupts the narrative of patriarchy. Writers and campaigners are more concerned with potential racism and Islamophobia than with actual sexual assault.

Whether it’s because Telford has the wrong type of victims or the wrong type of perpetrators, the conspiracy of silence allowed abuse to continue in the town unchecked for decades. According to a council-commissioned report, social workers knew of sexual violence in the late 1990s. In 2016, a whistleblower was suspended from the police force after passing evidence to a newspaper. Another whistleblower was sacked from her post at a counselling service to help sex abuse victims – which received local authority grants.

And so the abuse continued. Becky Watson was just 13 when she died in a car crash described as a ‘prank’ after having suffered two years of abuse by gangs of men. Her mother repeatedly reported suspects to the police, but has said: ‘Girls like Becky were treated like criminals.’ #MeToo asks us to believe without question allegations of knee-touching and unwanted kisses. But when working-class girls report abuse to the police they are dismissed.

Lucy Lowe was targeted by her abuser Azhar Ali Mehmood, aged 44, in 1997. She was just 14 when she became pregnant with his child. Two years later, when she was 16, Lucy was killed along with her mother and 17-year-old sister Sarah. Mehmood set their house on fire. He was jailed for murder but never arrested or charged for having sex with a minor. Another schoolgirl became pregnant six times in four years after being targeted by abusers in 2004. Council files uncovered by the Mirrorshow that social services, teachers, police and mental-health workers knew what was happening but did little.

Celebrities and journalists speaking for the #MeToo movement talk of believing the victim and helping other women find a voice. But, tragically, as far as working-class girls in Oxford, Rochester, Newcastle and now Telford are concerned, not all women are equal. The #MeToo movement demonstrates a nauseating degree of hypocrisy. Worse, it distracts time and resources away from genuine victims of abuse. Last week the MP for Grimsby, Melanie Onn, led a debate in parliament calling for wolf-whistling and catcalling to be classified as misogyny and punished as hate crime. Crusaders like Onn prefer to focus on random whistlers than confront the more difficult issue of gangs of Muslim men targeting working-class girls.

The English Defence League spells out what the BBC’s “The Betrayed Girls” documentary must do to be credible and useful.

Tonight [3 July 2017] the BBC will broadcast its documentary “The Betrayed Girls”.

It follows on from “The Three Girls”, the BBC’s dramatised account broadcast in May of the stories of three girls selected from the 47 victims of one of Rochdale’s 10 or so grooming gangs brought to trial since 2010.

We have no inside knowledge of what the programme contains, but we are promised a:

Documentary about the child abuse revelations in Rochdale and other towns. Featuring the harrowing testimony of the victims and the shocking truth from those who spoke out, this film reveals how it wasn’t just the professionals whose job it was to protect the girls who ignored their plight, but others did as well.

Unfortunately, viewers have been prepared for “The Betrayed Girls” by the earlier fictionalised “The Three Girls” which will have sown the seeds in some minds that this second programme must also be partly fictional, as if it, too, is not wholly true and so need not be believed if disbelief is psychologically easier.

But people who understand the circumstances wrote in yesterday’s Sunday press about it. Others have addressed the same issues.

Nazir Afzal

Nazir Afzal, a prosecutor in this Rochdale trial, has moved well beyond the hand-wringing “Betrayed girls” approach and is, rightly, looking at what motivated the Muslim rapists/groomers to assault non-Muslim girls.

This is what’s at the core of the issue. But Mr Afzal is not first with this question.

The Oxford SCR recommendation

More than two years ago an official report into rape/grooming in Oxford recommended that:

“With a significant proportion of those found guilty nationally of group Child Sexual Exploitation being from a Pakistani and/or Muslim heritage, relevant government departments should research why this is the case, in order to guide prevention strategies.”

Serious Case Review into Child Sexual Exploitation in Oxfordshire 26 February 2015

This recommendation led to a very brief flurry of interest by the media but, even with this recommendation as a shield, they quickly lost interest in the face of establishment torpor and Muslim outrage. The Times gave it a front page headline, and then promptly dropped it.

The English Defence League

In September 2014, the EDL demonstrated in Rotherham and we made the same point in our media briefing:

The EDL maintains that the Muslim religion, its texts, teachings and its insistence that Mohammed’s 7th century example is the perfect model to emulate in the 21st century, are at the core of the problems that surfaced in some of their many forms in Rotherham.

Professor Jay’s report used the word Muslim just a handful of times, and all of those were in passing.

Nick Griffin

Watch Nick Griffin in this 2004 video exposing the Muslim roots of the grooming/rape gang phenomenon:

Now, 13 years after the ground had been broken, and years during which EDL has been saying the same thing, is “The Betrayed Girls” hoping to bask in public and pundit approval for their courage in dusting the cobwebs off old material? Old material that the BBC themselves scorned for years.

Sarah Vine

Sarah Vine wrote in the Daily Mail on 24 June about “The Betrayed Girls”, but although she mentions the Muslim community, also keeps the fuzziness going by referring also to Pakistanis and clumsily inserting the red herring of ISIS and Boko Haram:

[Abridged:] The men’s religion, Islam, cannot be discounted, although it is frequently misconstrued in its approach to women and, in particular, Western women.

The foul notion that non-Muslim women are impure, promiscuous and therefore unworthy of respect, finds its expression all too often in the behaviour of Islamist terrorist organisations such as ISIS and Boko Haram.

The idea that they somehow deserve to be punished seems to be a recurring theme wherever Islamist terrorism is involved.

Will “The Betrayed Girls” take the next step?

Nazir Afzal says that:

Our jails are filling up with Muslim prisoners and yet the crimes they’re committing have become a taboo subject. … So-called Muslim community leaders would prefer these issues were ignored. … would prefer women to be oppressed and do what men want them to do. Forcing the Muslim community to do more to deal with these problems has to be the starting point to drive grooming gangs out of existence.

What are the next steps?

Nazir Afzal has outlined a chain of causality. It is also obvious that the chain does not bind all Muslims. It is these Muslims who must lead the way. No-one else is doing it.

Step 1 – The first step is to identify the passages in the Koran and the hadith that lead to:

misogyny among Muslims,

Muslim contempt for non-Muslim women,

the belief by some Muslim men that non-Muslim girls are “slags” who are available for their abuse, and

the belief among some Muslims that abusing non-Muslim girls and women is a right of Muslim men and that it is allowed and condoned as a cultural norm.

It will not be just the passages themselves that need to be identified, but the way these passages are treated in mosques, Muslim literature and across the UK Muslim community in general.

Step 2 – The second step is for Muslims across the UK, in every mosque and masjiid, to renounce these passages and excise them from the texts used for worship, education, outreach and private devotions.

Is “The Betrayed Girls” up to the job?

The greatest betrayal of the Rochdale girls was by their abusers. The groomers appeared to be offering love, admiration, esteem, status and a good time. The girls were betrayed in dispiriting, debauched and disgusting ways.

Douglas Murray spoke last month of primary and secondary problems.

The shortcomings of the police, council officials, Councillors, politicians and the media must be brought out and those culpable brought to account in ways that will be most effective in preventing future abuse.

But all these shortcomings are secondary problems. Will tonight’s “The Betrayed Girls” divert attention away from the primary problem of the child sexual abusers and their motivations and onto the secondary problem of weaknesses in dealing with the abuse and the abusers?

We, the English Defence League, will be watching to see if this BBC programme’s focus is on protecting the next generation of English mothers or on shielding Islam.

Many of you will have seen the February episode of Call the Midwife where the Midwives of Nonnatus house deliver the baby of a woman from Somaliland who has undergone female genital mutilation (FGM), once called female circumcision, also called cutting. On initial examination Mrs Farah is found to have ‘no more below than that child’s plastic doll’. The baby is born safely through an emergency episiotomy but the midwives are unable to prevent Mrs Farah’s younger sister being returned to Somaliland on the orders of her grandmother to be mutilated during the school holidays. Mrs Farah gives the midwives a passionate defence of her culture and the honour in which her sister will be held; but the voice over by Vanessa Redgrave tells us that after living in England for some years she does not send her own baby daughter for the procedure.

There are various forms or degrees of FGM. To be brief the clitoris or part may be removed (clitorectomy) and all or part of the labia minor and major may be removed. At its most drastic form all of this will be completed by abrasion of the inside of the vagina the sides of which are then stitched together sealing the vaginal passage. The edges of the labia will be sewn together (infibulation) and a small hole left for the exit of urine and menstrual fluid. The process is extremely painful and leaves girls prone to bladder and urine infections, and other infections of the urogenital system. The mere act of visiting the lavatory can take a woman half an hour – drip- drip –drip… The long term effect on women’s health is far beyond the initial agony, if they survive the process. Girls die of shock, infection and blood loss. It is usually performed well before the girl reaches puberty; depending on the region from 4 days old (Yemen) into the mid-teens (Kenya). In most cases the girl is too young to understand what is to happen, to have any say in it, a chance to protest or avoid the ordeal.

So why is it done? It is a practice in more than one culture and the reasons vary. There is a strong element of making sure that a girl remains a virgin until marriage and a chaste wife thereafter. Some Middle Eastern urban societies can enclose their women in harems where they work indoors or in buildings lit by an internal courtyard. But in rural societies, especially nomadic ones in North and North East Africa women are expected to work in the fields and with livestock. Instead of sealing them within a family workshop it was found convenient to seal them internally and they can be safely sent into the meadows to herd the goats.

Some elders believe that the very pain is itself a good thing because it makes the girls into obedient, submissive, enduring women who will bear all troubles inflicted on them stoically and silently.

The practice is more prevalent in Islamic cultures of Somalia, Egypt, North Africa and some parts of the Middle East. I have met Pakistani Muslims who are horrified at the idea.

Some Muslims will say it is not part of Islam; others that it is and they are reluctant to see that the damage it causes is any sort of problem.

A Muslim might say “There is nothing in the Koran mandating this” Which is true; the Koran only mandates male circumcision. The holy writ upon which proponents of FGM rely is one of the Ahadith, the sayings and deeds of Mohammed collected by his friends and family. Mohammed is the perfect man, to be emulated in all things, so if he did something or approved of something, all Muslims must follow. The Hadith concerned is in the collection compiled by Iman Abu Dawud, and was recollected by Umm Atiyyah al-Ansariyyah who was one of Mohammed’s female companions. She narrated “A woman used to perform circumcision in Medina. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to her: Do not cut severely as that is better for a woman and more desirable for a husband.”
In other words it is a good thing, but do not take to extremes.

I once had a discussion with a prominent Saudi born cleric on the subject. “Genital mutilation is wrong” he said. “But circumcision, done properly is a blessing and an honour for a woman” This was in east London; a conversation with a man of influence in London and England currently.

People will say, “But the practice predates Islam”. It does. I will quote the Somali born writer Ayaan Hirsi Ali here. She underwent FGM in her own childhood. She wrote “Muslim scholars have never condemned the ritual of female circumcision because in Islam the importance of virginity at marriage counts so heavily. When they came into contact with this tribal ritual they must have thought, Hey, wouldn’t that be a good way to guarantee a girl’s virginity? Excellent!”1

People will say “But other cultures practice it” and they do; but for different reasons and they are amenable to change. For example, the Dassanech tribe of East Africa, of animist belief, told BBC documentary maker Bruce Parry, as part of the series Tribe, that during labour the clitoris will expand and suffocate the emerging baby, kill the mother and damage the rest of the family. So the clitoris is removed from the woman before she marries and starts a family. As Christianity spreads in East Africa, combined with modern education about the behaviour of the clitoris, helped by the efforts of the Mother’s Union, women have begun to drop the practice. In some Muslim dominated countries where the few Christians are heavily persecuted the Christians may perform FGM on their daughters in the hope that conformity to the Islamic norm will reduce the amount of persecution their daughters will suffer. The female genitals are seen as dirty. Removal will render a girl clean and pure.

In that episode of Call the Midwife Nurse Crane says that “this” (FGM) was performed in the UK in years gone by. As FGM it wasn’t. But during the 19th century a few doctors working with women with mental health problems did perform clitorectomies. The thinking was that removing an organ of excitement and stimulation might sooth and calm women whose symptoms were severe agitation and paranoia. It wasn’t effective, the theory was erroneous, and like phrenology as a doctrine it is no longer performed other than to treat some very rare cases of cancer.

When I was asked to write this essay I thought some local facts would be useful so I made a freedom of Information request to the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust.

I asked the Council for the figures for the last three years of girls and women who have been found to have undergone the procedure, broken down into age groups. Whether this was discovered by the school or social services, and “How many times have steps been taken, and what were those steps, to prevent a young girl undergoing the procedure? In how many cases was the girl removed into council care? In how many cases were the police involved? “

They replied (Appendix i) that for the year 2015/16 90 instances of FGM were dealt with. 43 were aged 0-4, 34 of primary school age, 6 referred through education, the majority through health care professionals. For the year 2016/17 78 cases were dealt with; 42 girls aged 0-4, 24 primary school age and the majority again referred through health care. To my other questions they replied that they could not answer as either they did not keep data or the question was best addressed to the Area Health Authority. I am not sure why Barking and Dagenham Council does not keep statistics of the activities of their own social workers, or why they think those activities are supervised by Queens and King George’s hospitals.

I asked Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust for information about the number of women presenting at maternity departments having undergone FGM. They replied:

2015-16 at booking: 114 2015-16 at delivery: 78

2016-17 at booking: 103 2016-17 at delivery: 96

I did not expect them to be able to break down their figures to a specific borough. I was given a link to the NHS digital dataset which has some very general national statistics but no answers to specific questions about our specific area.

I asked whether there is a specialised team of midwives or unit comparable to that of Queen Charlotte hospital. They answered that there is a consultant obstetrician with a special interest in FGM, otherwise I was referred to a Government General Information leaflet with no specific information to answer my request.

I also asked for figures of deaths of mothers or babies due to complications caused by FGM, and the number of women presenting at the urogenital clinic with problems, as well as details of repair facilities. The final part of my request was for details of women or girls attending A&E as an acute emergency from a recently performed procedure and how many of these resulted in a report to the police.

I got the same answer repeated to all questions, “We cannot answer this request as it is not possible to code a procedure which is likely to have a direct connection to FGM as asked. The fact that a woman has undergone an FGM procedure at some point in her life does not necessarily bear relevance to the condition for which we have treated them or for which they had been admitted”

And repeated several times at intervals “The FGM mandatory reporting duty is a legal requirement provided for in the FGM Act (2003) as amended by the Serious Crime Act (2015). The Trust follows these guidelines.”

What they seem to be saying is that they comply with the guidelines to inform the police, but can’t say how many times they have done it.

Meanwhile one of UKIP’s policies is to introduce screening for FGM among those girls feared to be at risk. This is quite sensible. Schools already screen reception children for height, weight, hearing etc. and woe betide any parent whose child carries a little puppy fat. Surely the threat to health and future well-being that FGM poses to a girl is far more drastic. FGM is a form of child abuse. Teachers and all people working with children are constantly exhorted to be vigilant for child sex abuse. This is a form of abuse and of the sexual organs.

When Ayaan Hirsi Ali was the equivalent of a City Councillor in Amsterdam in the 1990s she put forward proposals for a screening programme2. A copy is attached as Appendix ii.

As she says, this must not be tolerated. It has been a crime in the UK since 1985, and a crime to remove a child to another country for that purpose since 2003. The penalty is up to 14 years in prison. There has been only one prosecution in all that time, a doctor who was acquitted as he was found to be repairing his patient after FGM not performing it. If 90 girls under the age of majority in one year, in one borough, are found to have suffered the process, or be at risk of it, how many cases nationally in the years since 2003?

And not a single substantive prosecution.

It is a scandal and a shame upon a civilised country.

In April 1987, she met her captor - who she names only as 'Malik' - at a taxi rank in the Midlands. He was kind to her and took her to his house to 'meet his parents'.

But the taxi driver then refused to take her home again and she was violently raped, starting what became more than a decade of being trapped in his house.

Her fractured relationship with her own family meant that she was not reported missing.

'I can still see that bedroom, the corner where I would rock in pain. Although after a while I stopped feeling pain, I think my body shut down,' she told The Daily Mirror.

In her new book Secret Slave, which she was advised to write for her own therapy, she tells how she was locked in a room and raped almost every night for 13 years before she escaped.

She explained how she was thrilled when she first fell pregnant, writing: 'When you feel a baby move in your stomach you feel you have someone with you, you are not alone.'

Malik would stop beating her during pregnancy, but the hope of keeping a child quickly faded when he took her first son away. Three more children were also taken away from her and given to other couples, she says for money.

Ms Ruston, now 44, also said she feels 'let down' by the authorities after she was repeatedly taken to hospital with nasty injuries.

She told Radio 4's Today Programme: 'There were always three or four people with me, so I couldn't see an escape. I never answered the doctors I just nodded or shook my head.

'I just wish that if someone had left the room then I could have said to the doctor: "Look, I need help, I'm being held, I need to get out", but they never left the room. If I went to the toilet then they were outside the door.'

She has also told of her belief that people were afraid to help her for fear of being accused of discrimination.

Anna said: 'Malik dressed me in his culture’s clothes, dyed my hair black, made me wear a scarf and keep my head down. When he spoke for me they thought it was a cultural thing. And I think people are scared to be accused of discrimination.'

She explained how she attempted to flee from the back door on one occasion, but was caught and badly beaten, making her too afraid to try and escape again.

But her determination to get away toughened when the family said they were going to take her to Pakistan.

She said: 'Towards the end when they said they were taking me to Pakistan I knew that it was either kill myself or get out because I knew that I wasn't going to go to a wedding and I knew that they would probably stone me to death or sell me.'

She is now too scared to report her captor to the police, even though officers have told her another girl will come forward with similar allegations if she makes a statement.

Ms Ruston even tried to choke herself with a scarf but, at the height of her depression, it was a health visitor who came to see her because she weighed just six stone who saved her.

Earlier this year, in the Munk Debate on the "refugee" crisis in Europe, I touched on the epidemic of child gang-rape on the Continent and observed that "migrant rights now trump children's rights":

"Migrant rights now trump children's rights." Hold that thought:

AN IRAQI asylum seeker who confessed to raping a 10-year-old boy in a swimming pool, claiming it was a "sexual emergency", has had his conviction overturned.

This was a Viennese rape case that received quite a bit of coverage a few months ago, mainly because of the accused's defense that he was undergoing a "sexual emergency": Like almost 80 per cent of "refugees", Amir is a fit young man. He'd scrammed out of the country leaving his wife behind and therefore had not enjoyed conjugal relations for four months. Hence the "sexual emergency":

When the youngster went to the showers, Amir A. allegedly followed him, pushed him into a toilet cubicle, and violently sexually assaulted him.

Following the attack, the accused rapist returned to the pool and was practising on the diving board when police arrived, after the 10-year-old raised the alarm with the lifeguard.

The child suffered severe anal injuries which had to be treated at a local children's hospital, and is still plagued by serious post-traumatic stress disorder.

Amir was convicted of rape and serious sexual assault of a minor and sentenced to six years. However, the Austrian Supreme Court has now quashed the verdict. But hang on, didn't the guy confess? Ah, yes, but...

The Supreme Court yesterday overturned the conviction, accepting the defence lawyer's claim that the original court had not done enough to ascertain whether or not the rapist realised the child was saying no...

You might think the screams would have been a clue there, but apparently not:

The appeal court said the initial ruling should have dealt with whether the offender thought that the victim had agreed with the sexual act, or whether he had intended to act against his will.

I believe in Austria the minimum age of consent is 14, so, by definition, a ten-year old cannot "consent" to a "sexual act", if violent anal rape can be dignified as such.

Or at least that's the way we used to understand it in the civilized world. Of course, in much of the rest of the planet - and especially in the Muslim world - children are obliged to "consent" to all kinds of things. Once upon a time, when the unfortunate denizens of such societies came to the west, we were culturally confident enough to require them to assimilate with us.

Instead, in an age of civilizational self-loathing, we assimilate with them. So the same sexual license young Muslim men enjoy in, say, Kandahar now extends to Linz and Salzburg .

When I made my point in the Munk Debate, our opponents, the telly historian Simon Schama and the former UN High Commissioner Louise Arbour, thought it was an opportunity for comedy. Simon reckoned me and Nigel Farage were just "a bit sad" - losers who couldn't get any action and so got turned on by obsessing about migrant rape. This insouciance did not work out well for him.

To accord their response more respect than it merits, Louise and Simon's point was that: sure, there's a bit of child rape here and there, but what's the big deal? It's a relatively small and manageable amount.

It's not, but let that pass. That was my point: "Migrant rights trump women's rights" and "migrant rights trump children's rights" and (in some of the most grisly cases) "migrant rights trump disabled rights". It's not that there's only three or four - or seven or twelve, or 29 or 97 or 236 or 1,768 - rapes. It's not the "small" number of cases, but the fact that, in a fainthearted age prostrate before the multicultural pieties, these "few" cases are changing us. So that the most eminent jurists in Austria feel obliged to assimilate with their invaders: hey, how was poor old Amir supposed to know the cute l'il moppet wasn't consenting to anal rape?

Is this ruling of general application? Would Fritz and Gerhard have their appetites so indulged? Or do these new migrant rights also trump such outmoded concepts as equality before the law?

From the expanded e-book edition of Mark Steyn's Passing Parade:

According to the Vienna Institute of Demography, by mid-century a majority of Austrians under 15 will be Muslim. This is a country that not so long ago was 90 percent Catholic. But "not so long ago" is another country: Salzburg, 1938, singing nuns, Julie Andrews — "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" Salzburg, 2038: How do you solve a problem like sharia?

But the Sound of Music gags aren't really that funny, are they? The hills are alive with the sound of child rape, but in the halls of justice, amidst all the celebrations of diversity, no one can hear their screams.

And, for those still looking for the joke, the funniest line in the story:

Amir A, 20, was visiting the Theresienbad pool in the Austrian capital of Vienna last December as part of a trip to encourage integration.

The militants, all of whom were foreign nationals, included one Chechen, three Arabs and two Afghans. They entered the school and opened fire on school staff and children,[6][8] killing 141 people, including 132 schoolchildren, ranging between eight and eighteen years of age.[9][10] A rescue operation was launched by the Pakistan Army's Special Services Group (SSG) special forces, who killed all seven terrorists and rescued 960 people.[6][11][12] On 2 December 2015, Pakistan hanged four militants involved in the Peshawar massacre.[13]

This was the deadliest terrorist attack ever to occur in Pakistan, surpassing the 2007 Karsaz attack.[14] According to various news agencies and commentators, the nature and preparation of the attack was very similar to that of the Beslan school hostage crisis that occurred in the North Ossetia–Alania region of the Russian Federation in 2004.[15][16][17][18][19] On 9 July 2016, the mastermind of the attack Omar Khorasani was killed in a drone strike in eastern Afghanistan.[20]

EDMONTON - Three men are facing human trafficking and pimping charges after teen girls were lured into Edmonton's prostitution underground in two separate cases.

Police say one man lured an underage girl to Edmonton from Saskatoon for the purpose of prostitution in July 2012.
When the girl arrived in the city, police say she was plied with alcohol and drugs including cocaine. But soon afterward, she allegedly learned the less scrupulous nature of her benefactors.

"Through online conversations with a third party, she came to Edmonton and basically was caught in a very difficult situation," said police spokesman Scott Pattison, adding she was "sexually assaulted, beaten . . . and basically threatened and put into the sex trade industry."

She eventually escaped a motel room where she was held against her will by asking her captors if she could go out to get a soft-drink.

They took her shoes but the girl, while intoxicated, went shoeless into the wintry conditions and was found by a passing motorist lying underneath a street lamp.

Ali Saghafi, 25, of no fixed address but also goes by the street name A.K., was arrested on Dec. 20, and is facing a number of charges including assault, sexual assault, unlawful confinement, trafficking of a person under the age of 18 years, procuring prostitution and living off the avails of juvenile prostitution.

In a second case, an 18-year-old woman was lured by another girl -- a 16-year-old -- to a motel where she was held captive and forced into prostitution by two men.

Police were alerted to the situation and began an investigation last week that led to the arrest of Hamid Fazli Ghejlou, 31, and Shahin Ranjbar, 23, on Thursday.

Ghejlou is facing numerous charges including trafficking in persons, procuring prostitution, living on the avails of prostitution of an adult and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

Ranjbar is charged with trafficking with person, procuring prostitution, living on the avails of prostitution of an adult, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and assault.

Pattison said the underage girl is believed to be back home in Saskatoon but he could not comment on the condition of the 18-year-old from Edmonton.

Andrea Burkhart, an official with Alberta's Action Coalition on Human Trafficking, says the recent cases are "the tip of the iceberg" in Edmonton.

"Many victims never come forward to law enforcement, because of fear or because they don't know what their rights are," said Burkhart.
