The conference’s organisers, the Danish Ethnic Youth Council, had invited the scholar Muhammad Tahir ul-Qadri, leader of the Muslim organisation Minhaj-ul-Quran, to speak on tackling religious radicalisation. The head of the domestic intelligence agency PET, Jakob Scharf, was also invited.

While ul-Qadri is best known for declaring a fatwa, or religious ruling, against terrorism, he also worked as a legal adviser to the Pakistani government in the shaping of anti-blasphemy laws that were recently used to arrest a mentally-challenged girl for allegedly burning the Koran.

This morning, Hækkerup announced that had she would not have agreed to speak at the Conference for Political and Religious Radicalism, which is being held at Copenhagen Business School on September 11, if she had known that ul-Qadri was also planning on attending.

“I am very angry at being connected with something that is so contrary to my views,” Hækkerup told Ritzau. “Politically, I see no reason to take part in the debate. I think it is deplorable that he is coming.”

On the conference's event page, the Danish Ethnic Youth Council confirmed that Hækkerup had cancelled.

Jaleh Tavakoli, a blogger for Jyllands-Posten newspaper and member of City Council, wrote on Sunday that the only reason that ul-Qadri would be a partner in the fight against religious radicalism, is his 2010 fatwa against terrorism.

“The leader of Minhaj-ul-Quran, who is expected to speak at the conference in Copenhagen, is a proponent of, and has actively participated in, the process of Islamisation that lead to the type of legislation that the girl is being charged under,” Tavakoli wrote. “Simply put, he has been a legal adviser in connection with [Pakistan's] establishing of Sharia law and blasphemy laws which could mean death for many Christians, atheists and Muslims.”

Ul-Qadri is on a six-day tour of Denmark that includes speaking at the European Peace Conference at Tivoli Congress Center on Sunday. He was nominated for the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize and has taken a prominent stance against the use of the Koran to justify terrorism.

Honourable Supreme Court,

My attorney has presented juridical arguments to the effect that I must be acquitted and I shall refrain from elaborating.

However, allow me to express my quiet bafflement that somebody can claim that it has been my intention to accuse every last Muslim father in the world of abusing his children – particularly in light of the fact that I have carefully explained that it was never my intention to disseminate such an absurd contention.

For precisely that reason, I would have welcomed an opportunity to review the statements I now stand accused of having uttered before they were placed on the Internet. If the interviewer had fulfilled this basic journalistic obligation, I would have demanded that my remarks be corrected so as to reflect my true opinions and the prosecutor could have saved the trouble of dragging me through the courts.

I am even more baffled at one of the claims about my person that has been circulated in connection with this case, namely that I am a racist. I have never been, I am not now and I shall never be a racist. On the contrary, all my life I have opposed racist attitudes, by which I mean hatred towards and denigrating speech about people due their descent, skin colour or other so-called racial characteristics – in other words, antipathy against or ill treatment of people due to circumstances over which they have no control.

Islam is not a race and therefore criticism of Islam cannot be racism.

Islam, which lurks behind this entire case, has been described from a variety of viewpoints. Some say that it is a religion, others that is an all-encompassing ideology that contains a religion, still others emphasise its cultural norms, its culturally transmitted customs and practices. Some even maintain that Islam is so multifaceted that it is impossible to describe it.

But regardless of one's approach, it must be clear that Islam is not a hereditary human attribute.

If our Western freedom means anything at all, we must insist that every grown-up person is responsible for his or her beliefs, opinions, culture, habits and actions.

We enjoy political freedom and we enjoy freedom of religion. This implies a largely unlimited right to disseminate one's political persuasion and religious beliefs. That is as it should be. But the price we all have to pay for this freedom is that others have a right to criticise our politics, our religion and our culture.

Islamic spokesmen have the freedom to advocate their concept of society, which implies the introduction of a theocracy governed by god-given laws, i.e. sharia, the abolition of man-made laws and by implication freedom of expression and democracy. They are free to think that women are inferior to men as concerns their rights and their pursuit of happiness. They are even entitled to disseminate such opinions.

I cannot recall a single instance in this country where an Islamic spokesman has been prosecuted for saying that, or course, sharia will become the law of the land once the demographic and political realities make it possible. This despite the fact that we have several examples of, e.g., imams who have openly declared that the imposition of theocracy is a religious duty incumbent on all believers.

In return, these theocrats and sharia-advocates must accept the right of those who believe in democracy, free institutions and human equality to criticise Islam and to oppose its dissemination and the atavistic cultural norms practiced by some Muslims.

It is this right – I would even say duty – to describe, criticise and oppose a totalitarian ideology that I have tried to exercise to the best of my ability.

My speech and my writings have had no other purpose than to alert my fellow citizens to the danger inherent in the Islamic concept of the state and the law.

I have made no secret of the fact that I consider this fight for our liberties to be the most important political struggle of our time.

I would not be able to live with my guilty conscience if – out of fear of public condemnation and ridicule – I refrained from telling the truth as I see it.

And regardless of the outcome of this trial, I intend to continue my struggle for free speech and against totalitarian concepts of any stripe.
Account of Aarhus Demo Yesterdaytag:4freedoms.com,2012-04-01:3766518:Topic:982712012-04-01T14:46:34.334ZChris Wintle Cxfhttp://4freedoms.com/profile/ChrisWintleCxf

By Henrik R. Clausen

On Saturday, March 31st 2012, street fighting broke out in the otherwise docile city of Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark. A demonstration organized by DDL/EDL for human rights and against Islamization was assaulted by the combined forces of self-styled 'anti-fascists' and Muslims seeking to teach the demonstrators 'tolerance'. The Danish police was out in force and largely managed to protect the demonstration from the attackers.

Details and pictures below.

What is the English Defence League?
The English Defence League is a grass-roots movement against the Islamization of Great Britain, created in Luton 2009 after a homecoming rally for British soldiers was disgraced by Islamists scorning the soldiers. The organisation quickly gained a large public following and staged many public rallies, at times gathered thousands of supporters, mainly in the English lower and middle class.

The EDL mission statement has five key objectives:

Protecting And Promoting Human Rights

Promoting Democracy And The Rule Of Law By Opposing Sharia

Ensuring That The Public Get A Balanced Picture Of Islam

Promoting The Traditions And Culture Of England While At The Same Time Being Open To Embrace The Best That Other Cultures Can Offer

Working In Solidarity With Others Around The World

The EDL rallies, however, have been meet with fierce resistance from organisations like Hope, not Hate, Unite Against Fascism as well as various Muslims in Britain, who have strongly opposed the right of the EDL to hold street rallies. This has led to a long series of violent clashes between the groups, turning the EDL rallies into major operational challenges for the British police, who questions that freedom of expression and freedom of assembly are worth expenses in the range of millions of pounds.

Also the British government is strongly opposed to the English Defence League. This was most clearly expressed by prime minister David Cameron, who on August 11th 2011 in the British Parliamentcondemned everything the EDL stands for, and further stated that of all the sick people in Britain, none were sicker than the English Defence League (their response is here) and their attempts to restore order after the recent riots.

The tricky meeting in Aarhus
While the English Defence League has been very successful in their homeland, attempts to export the concept to other European countries have failed so far. A rally in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on October 30th 2010 was hampered by relocations, delays, violent opposition and other problems, and managed to attract only a fraction of the numbers seen at the rallies in England.

The DDL/EDL CounterJihad meeting in Aarhus on March 2012 was announced publicly well in advance, but organisational problems marred the preparations, some prospective speakers cancelled their appearance, and fierce discussion broke out when hard left sources claimed that National Socialists had been invited to attend the event, a red light to many potential attendees.

Massive political condemnation
When news of the plans were confirmed in Aarhus, the political condemnation was swift and powerful. While Danish politicians and media tend to take pride in protecting freedom of expression against Islamist pressure, in this case there was no doubt: All self-respecting local politicians and media agreed to condemn the DDL/EDL rally and what it stood for. Even the local branch of the usually Islam-critical Danish People's Party joined in the rejection of the EDL and their objectives.

A tale of three (or four) demonstrations
The city council of Aarhus even undertook the effort to organize a counterdemonstration "Aarhus for Tolerance”, which took place on March 21st 2012, where the unconditional rejection of what DDL/EDL stands for could be expressed clearly by all, including mayor Jacob Bundsgaard.

A further counterdemonstration "Aarhus for Pluralism” was organized on March 31st by several political parties, labour unions, leftist and immigrant organisations, in order to show their unconditional rejection of everything the various European defence leagues stand for. Antifawas the main organizer of public relations and logistics aiming to bring thousands of protesters to Aarhus, gathering under Communist/anarchist banners.

Pro-diversity demonstration under Communist/anarchist flags

While the mainstream of the left wing protests against DDL/EDL made clear that they did not intend to commit violence, some dissented. They publicly declared that they did not accept the non-violent approach desired by the local left, and were preparing to assault the rally directly. Erik 'Cablefish' Storrud, who has a long record of public order offenses, made that clear on Anarkistisk Debatforum, March 22nd 2012 (by way of Uriasposten) :

There is NO chance that "Aarhus for Pluralism” will be the only street activity against EDL on that day. You 'local' people have by now condemned the more militant anti-fascists to such an extent that there really is no reason to respect your opinions and desires any longer.

Saturday March 31st 2012
The sun rose on a sunny Aarhus on the day of the demonstrations.

At 13:00, the counterdemonstration assembled in front of the town hall, under communist, labour union and anarchist banners. It was a rare display of strength for classical communists, whose banner were dominant in the street, and not least for Antifa, who otherwise has a record of violent assaults against those they disagree with, for instance in Stuttgart June 3rd 2011. After initial music and speeches, the estimated 4,000 participants went on a 3.7 kilometer march through the city, where an open air festival was held beside the Aarhus cathedral.

At 14:00, the demonstration started in Mølleparken, a centrally located park in front of the Aarhus main library. Danish police was out in force to protect the demonstration against potential problems from the violent hard left or immigrants. An estimated 150-200 persons participated in the rally, which sported flags from various nations (including Israel) and a prominent "Stop Sharia” banner.

Speeches were held in a relaxed atmosphere, and police was easily in control of the singular disturbing elements trying to assault the demonstration. At the police lines leftist and immigrant youth were shouting "Facists!”, "Nazis!”, "Fucking Jews!” and "Kill all the Jews”, but the solid police presence held the intimidation down to a reasonable level. The contradictory statements had an explanations: Radical immigrants of Palestinian origin are strongly anti-semitic, and seized the opportunity to show their honest opinion of Jews and Israel.

Further, some immigrants had shirts prominently displaying "Soldiers of Allah” - a reference to classical violent Islamic Jihad. Interestingly, they walked with the hard left cover organisation "Forældre mod Politibrutalitet”.

At another location the white flag of the Caliphate was flown, demonstrating the aim of the Muslims to implement Islamic law – and by implication demonstrating the naïve attitudes of their leftist allies.

The white flag of the Caliphate

Antifa launches the assault
All proceeded in relative peace until around 15:30, when an estimated 150 'anti-fascists' assaulted the demonstration without warning. They managed to overrun the police line and Antifa posted on Twitter that most of the attackers had managed to escape arrest. Police quickly regained control of the situation, letting the DDL/EDL event continue after a brief interruption.

In the streets around Mølleparken, however, things were not at ease. Antifa 'activists' used tools brought for the occasion to break rocks out of the pavement, using them, bottles and other projectiles as ammunition against police and their vehicles, as well as home made fireworks powerful enough to, according to one 'activist', blow a shoulder right off a man. A barricade was erected in Grønnegade east of Mølleparken, but was quickly demolished by the police. Many arrests were made.

The demonstration in Mølleparken continued as planned until 17 in the afternoon, after which a bus was escorted in to bring the most prominent DDL/EDL members into safety. Police sought to escort the bus away from the assaulting forces, but it was halted in a nearby street, pelted with stones, and drove from the place with broken windows. Antifa later boasted that an additional three buses, held in reserve by the police, had also been vandalized by the so-called 'anti-fascists', and drove from the place with their windows broken.

While the higher profile participants and organizers had been safely escorted from the area, some 20-30 participants were left behind half an hour after the demonstration, surrounded by some 200-300 agitated left-wing extremists and immigrants calling for blood and throwing bottles at the last participants. One of them threw a bottle back to the mob at waist height – and was promptly arrested by the police for attempting to commit severely dangerous violence, as well as for inciting public disorder.

The aftermath: A Pyrrhic Antifa victory
While Antifa boasted of their forceful display of might and power towards those they consider 'intolerant', the victory was hollow. Blogs, television stations and newspapers have documented the raw anger and intolerance of the Antifa and the immigrant youth towards those of other opinions, eclipsing the peaceful counter demonstration entirely.

A full 89 arrests for public disorder offences completed the picture. On the following Sunday, preliminary hearings were held for the most serious cases. For instance, an Ahmed Muhammad of Somali origin explained how he participated in a group of 80 Antifa and immigrants seeking to beat up the "intolerant racists”, yet ending up clashing with the police instead. The most radical 'activists' can expect to spend 6-12 months behind bars for the rioting, while most will be fined Dkr. 4000 (US $ 700) for politically motivated disturbances of public order.

One of over 80 rioters arrested during the day

Not only did the day turn violent as the most dire predictions had expected. It was also clear from the systematic use of Antifa Twitterand other media, as well as the organisational skill displayed in the assaults, that Antifa as such had planned this deliberately. While they claim to be tolerant and pluralistic, the tolerance applies only to those not opposing their views, and the pluralism does not include views critical to Islam or protesting Islamist undermining of democracy and freedom.

Thus, Antifa has demonstrated that they willingly play the game of the Islamists, join up with the Soldiers of Allah, and readily use violence against the police, critics of Islam and the current societal order as such.

But when it comes to other religions, Nydahl will not speak in his capacity as a lama. The Buddha lived 2,450 years ago and therefore did not express any opinion on religions such as Christianity or Islam; consequently Ole Nydahl in his role as a Buddhist teacher will not do so either. Lashkar-e-Toiba is among the most powerful Islamic groups in Southern Asia. In addition to the usual threats against crusaders, countries supporting Denmark in its conflict over the Muhammed cartoons, the United Nations etc., his message contained a specific reference to Buddhists. It was delivered when he spoke about the UN Security Council, which Osama bin Laden accused of excluding Islamic nations all the while granting the right of veto to crusaders of the world and Buddhist pagans.

Lashkar-e-Toiba a.k.a. The work the battle goes on in spite of all the grief of this world. That is also the impression one gets when reading his books. In the book Riding the Tiger with the subtitle Twenty Years on the Road: The Risks and Joys of Bringing Tibetan Buddhism to the West, soon to be published in Danish as Over alle grnser, he describes a 1974 visit to Denmark by a delegation of prominent Tibetan Buddhists led by the head of the Kagya tradition, the 16th Karmapa. Nydahl arranged for his guests to be introduced to the old Nordic gods and the Saga heroes, whose ideals of courage and the stiff upper lip he finds more relevant than ever in a time of empty emotionality, lack of style and profound confusion.

The Karmapa was also given the opportunity to visit Holger Danske ("Holger the Dane") at Kronborg known to readers of Shakespeare as Elsinore Castle. The mind is unlimited and varying circumstances make it possible to create new links with some of its special characteristics. When the keepers of a culture disappear, the knowledge associated with that culture dies with them. Just look at our Greenlanders [Danish Inuit citizens translators note].

We live in times characterized by an incredible vulgarization and forgetfulness regarding our values. Here in Scandinavia it is a bit better than in most parts of the world, but it is really a pity that generally people do not exploit the potential of the mind.

Many of us can remember a time when we had neither Islam nor Buddhism in this country. Now we have experienced an influx of ideas that are alien to Danish culture.

The humanitarian and democratic aspects of Buddhism were never alien to us. They are in the Danish constitution. The teachings about the nature of the mind are another matter. The realisation that we can only see perfection outside ourselves because we already harbour that condition gives meaning to everything. The path and the purpose become clear, and we can work our way towards states of mind that are beneficial to everyone. That evolutionary option is open to everybody.

At the same time we are witnessing the opposite development with the spread of the Islamic law-religion founded on the idea that one should voluntarily submit to a set of strict rules dictating everything one must think, believe and do?

To put it plainly, it is really embarrassing that people after 2,000 years of development towards freedom here in Europe cannot comprehend their potential, do not trust themselves, or are so ill brought up that they throw away their free will and submit to a totalitarian and fascist system. For it is sheer fascism to surrender oneself to other people in that way no matter if it is to a deity dictating what to do, a prophet, Hitler or Stalin. It is always the same. Whenever you deny people their freedom of choice and self-determination, you reduce them to inferior beings.

But people do that to themselves?

Yes, first they do it themselves. Then the system forces them to remain in a state of serfdom.

Herd-poison
How can one explain the human desire for submission?

Aldous Huxley, who I studied intensively at the university, called it herd-poison. If a lot of people do something, it will attract others who want to belong or be a part of something. And if an incipient movement is sufficiently extremist, it will always attract certain unstable individuals. That is the reason why something that is basically against most people's nature may become powerful and therefore very harmful.

What can we do to counter this?

We must see to it that things are in the open. We must insist that people who wish to use less of their humanity and who may therefore become a danger to those who want to be free can be taunted, laughed at and shown for what they are. In other words, they should be treated like anybody else. If you grant such people a place to hide and say that they must not be teased because that might make the prophet or someone similar angry, then we are on the road to destroying the possibilities of future generations to be free. If we accept that people are not permitted to think for themselves nor to present things as they are, we may well describe it as a cancer. It is something that is against society's general line of development. This malignancy must be fought by telling the people who choose submission that there are other possibilities if they develop an appetite for living."

Buddhism's Destruction

A giant Buddha statue in Bamyan, Afghanistan, erected in the 6th century A.D., blown up by the Taliban in 2001 How has Buddhism fared in relation to Islam?

Almost all the destruction suffered by Buddhist culture has happened through Islam. In their persecution of polytheism Muslims have probably been unable to distinguish between the Brahmans and the Buddhists. They have seen a lot of idols and assumed that Buddhists worshipped them as exterior forces. However, our paintings and statues do not depict gods but forms of energy facilitating super-personal and liberating experiences."

If we go southward in Afghanistan from Mazar-i-Sharif and down to Kandahar and then east, we will find the old Buddhist core area that was destroyed by three Muslim invasions over the period from 900 to 1100. That was Ashokas[A1] old core area and where Buddhism originated. Later Islam began to penetrate down through India. And, according to new Indian research, the Muslims killed some 80 million Indians from ca. A.D. 1200 up until the English stopped it in the 18th century. We are talking about Buddhists, Hindus, Jains and others. If you peruse Arabian sources, the term budh the root word of Buddha and Buddhism denotes someone worshipping many gods and whom Muhammed says must be killed under all circumstances. Who cannot even obtain dhimmi-status. Even the original Buddhist little road through Central Asia was destroyed by Muslims. So one might say that we have had much to thank Islam for throughout the years.

Embarrassing pacifism
Why didnt the Buddhists fight back?

Having a waterproof, completely logical system is very dangerous. When you do, you will have a tendency to bring all your friends along with you into an ivory tower and forget all the ordinary people running around down below. What will people do whose religion resembles a Swiss cheese full of holes and devoid of logic and thus standing on feet of clay? Well, the more porous one's religion is, the more one will try to convince others in order to convince oneself. All according to the well-known principle: billions of flies eat manure, billions of flies cannot be wrong.

Ole Nydahl emphasizes that there is nothing wrong with Jesus encouraging his adherents to make all people his disciples. After all, Nydahl himself tries to convince people of the blessings of Buddhism. What he rejects is the practice of subjugating the infidels by means of the sword.

Are there no examples of Buddhists having taken up arms? Have they all adhered to a radical pacifism?

Yes, Im afraid so. I am not aware of any adequate resistance to aggression. And that is really embarrassing when you see your wife, your children, your loved ones, your friends being butchered, and you have not armed yourself to protect them. It must be terrible.

Is it being discussed among Buddhists today that you should have done something?

There are two schools. To the south we find Therevada Buddhism opposing any sort of violence because they see suffering as a means to liberate people from their own bad karma. On the other hand, the northern school maintains that a bodhisattva ought to be able to protect others even if it brings suffering to the attacker. For example, we have a story about the Buddha killing a man who tried to kill 500 others. That was the better option. So, if you really feel deep compassion and are yourself without disturbing sentiments then you must interfere. I know from personal experience that I react instinctively. I was a boxer for four years and I am pretty strong. If someone small, a woman especially, gets bullied by someone bigger, I immediately jump in."

I suppose there is also a danger that you may lose your tradition if you do not act?

The 16th Karmapa Ranjung Rigpe Dorje (1924-1981), who became a teacher for Hannah and Ole Nydahl and who visited Denmark in 1974 My tradition of Buddhism the diamond way may very well be lost. It can survive only as long as one can find people with a rich inner life, who have through meditation achieved a certain level of insight, and as long as there are lamas who can transmit knowledge on the nature of the mind. In 1959 following the Chinese conquest of Tibet some 85,000 people survived by escaping down the mountains into India. 5,000 were educated, had had inner experiences, and had preserved various of the Buddhas teachings, and they died so rapidly from tuberculosis that it was said that the funeral pyres never had the time to cool. My wife and I arrived in 1968, just in time to get close to the great teachers from the Kagyu line of meditation. A few years later from around 1970 to the mid-1980s almost everyone was dead.

Ole Nydahl emphasizes that as opposed to southern Buddhism which he thinks will survive as long as its scriptures are preserved northern Tibetan Buddhism and especially the survival of the diamond way is dependant on the direct transmission of knowledge from teachers to pupils.

When Westerners came to Tibet, they quickly realized that it was a rather nasty place with slavery, oppression, poverty, class differences, brutal punishments etc. How can that be reconciled with Buddhism?

We take no refuge in anything Tibetan. It was a medieval society like Europe around 1450. The only thing of interest to us is the transmission of the teachings which the Buddha gave to his brightest students. That wisdom was preserved in India for 1,500 years and then kept for 900 years in Tibet until 1959, and now its here. I really like the East Tibetans the Kampas proud, Viking-like warriors who kept the Chinese and other foes out all through that time.

We could use a bit of their fighting spirit in contemporary Denmark.

We have it. Several of my students have joined the National Guard. That is a good place for young people if they feel that our country is in danger. If I were a bit more in Denmark and if I were under 65 I would join, too.

Lars Hedegaard is a chief editor of sappho.dk

If a country wishes to save its taxpayers some money, it should enact stiff immigration laws. That’s the conclusion of a report from the Danish Integration Ministry, according to Spiegel Online.

Denmark has imposed tough measures to stem the flow of Third World immigrants, and those stricter laws have saved the taxpayers about $10 billion during the past decade. The country now boasts the strictest controls in the European Union. Though the Eurocrat left has voiced opposition to the tighter controls, conservatives believe that Denmark is in better shape than most countries that have been overrun by immigrants, many of whom join the welfare rolls and commit crimes.

Details

The report offers three keys figures, Spiegel notes that the money saved over the last 10 years by Denmark "would supposedly have been spent on social benefits or housing," adding:

According to the figures, migrants from non-Western countries who did manage to come to Denmark have cost the state €2.3 billion, while those from the West have actually contributed €295 million to government coffers.

In other words, Third World immigrants have made little if any contribution to Danish society, while immigrants from the Christian West have.

Regardless of the dynamics, as it does in the United States, the battle in Denmark comes down to right and left; those who wish to preserve Denmark as a country for Danes, and those who wish to transmogrify it into a polyglot nation of multiculturalism.

Thus, says Spiegel, “The report has led to jubilation among right-wing politicians.”

“We now have it in black and white that restrictions [on immigrants] pay off,” said DPP [Danish People's Party] finance spokesman Kristian Thulesen Dahl. The DPP will almost certainly exploit the figures in future negotiations over the Danish economy.

Integration Minister Soren Pind stated the obvious: “Now that we can see that it does matter who comes into the country, I have no scruples in further restricting those who one can suspect will be a burden on Denmark,” he told the Jyllands-Posten newspaper.

A key mover behind Danish immigration reform is the Danish People’s Party, led by Pia Kjærsgaard (pictured above left). The DPP doesn't want to import immigrants who sit on welfare. “A Somali who is no good for anything, that is simply not acceptable,” says Kjærsgaard.

The DPP and other conservative immigration reformers in Denmark want a complete halt to non-Western immigration, Spiegel reports.

The left, Spiegel observes, is unhappy. Publishing the obvious about Third World immigrants “has sparked outrage from opposition parties like the centrist Social Liberal Party, which dismissed it as undignified and discriminatory.” Spiegel added:

The party’s integration spokeswoman, Marianne Jelved, said: “A certain group of people is being denounced and being blamed for our deficit, being made into whipping boys."

She added: "We cannot classify people depending on their value to the economy. That is degrading in a democracy that has a basic value of equality.”

Tougher Border Controls

The report strengthens the hand of Danes who are ready to stop immigration altogether, although analysts say that appears unlikely. But Danish immigration patriots are progressing. According to Spiegel, “The number of asylum seekers and relatives of immigrants seeking entry into Denmark dropped by more than two-thirds within nine years as a result of the tough laws.”

As The New American reported last month, the Danes have imposed 24-hour border and customs controls at their country's borders with Germany and Sweden. The Danish People's Party forced the government to enact those controls by withhholding support for a national budget. Blue-collar Danes, the New York Times has reported, are fed up with immigrants. Those workers "chafed the most at ultraliberal immigration policies that allowed thousands of immigrants — from Iran, Iraq and the Balkans — to enter the country in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s," the Times reported.

Pia Kjærsgaard, a leader in Denmark against unrestricted immigration, has parlayed that resentment into a political career, and, theTimes reported, “is widely credited with forcing an overhaul of the country’s immigration policies, now among the most restrictive in Europe.”

Last year, the Danes set up a point system to ensure that immigrants will contribute to Danish society. It offers a set number of points for educational level, and also offers points toward immigration approval in exchange for renouncing public benefits.

Unsurprisingly, the Eurocrats don’t like that measure either. Analysts, however, say the Danes have a basis for concern about their borders, given the flood of Tunisians and Libyans who — having fled the unrest in their own countries — have flooded Italy and attempted to fan out across Europe.
It is of urgent importance. It tells of the terrible turn of events in Denmark, which for years now has bravely spearheaded the West's fights to save free speech, now and seemingly in perpetuity under assault from both the Marxian Left and the press of sharia (Islamic law) -- and with zero support from diplomatic, governmental, or professional institutions in the United States, home and caretaker of the First Amendment. This appalling lack of support, which translates into a lack of courage and vision, is the main reason the assault of free speech continues to be successful. But et tu, Denmark?

There have been signs: for example, former Prime MInister Anders Fogh Rasmussen's gratuitous slap at Pastor Terry Jones' stated intention to burn Korans to mark the jihad attacks of 9/11 in September of this year; and the Danish paper Politiken's February 2010 apology for reprinting Kurt Westergaard's Mohammed cartoon, which Westergaard, wonderful man, one month past the nearest-missassassination attempt yet that sent him and his five-year-old granddaughter into his "safe" room (a reinforced bathroom with an alarm button), declared the newspaper's apology a "setback for free speech."

And so it was. But such events are more than "setbacks." They fit into a terrible and even totalitarian climate of assault in which the Danish government, via its public prosecutor, as the letter states, is "waging a lawfare offensive against outspoken critics of Islam and Muslim practices."

Last month, Danish MP Jesper Langballe was convicted of "hate speech" -- "racial discrimination," for having highlighted the pattern of "honor killings" in Muslim families. (Here is his "confession.") Now in the crosshairs is my very dear friend and colleague, Lars Hedegaard, President of the Danish Free Press Society and the International Free Press Society. (A historian as well as a journalist and author, Lars took me on a special tour of Copenhagen, which I wrote about here.) On January 24 he goes on trial. His crime? Discussing the high incidence of family rape within Islamic cultures, which the prosecutor is attempting to outlaw as "racism."

In fact, the Danish prosecutor is attempting to enforce Islamic "blasphemy" laws, which outlaw all criticism of Islam.

Jesper Langballe and now Lars Hedegaard have been targeted because they are Danes of courage and principle who refuse to lie down and shut up and let the "multicultural" Big Lies wash in and inundate their mental and moral capacities to that endpoint of totalitarian triumph where citizens become subjects, minions who no longer articulate or even recognize truth and morality. In a world where mandarins of Left and mullahs of sharia so conspire, we risk a kind of double-dhimmification in acquiesence, rendering civilization incapable of self-defense.

Please read the Danish Free Press Soctety's letter and realize it is in fact an SOS. Please help us preserve it.

Those who have been following the Danish cartoon crisis and several subsequent attempts by radical Muslims to kill and bomb Danes and Danish institutions may be excused for believing that Denmark is in the forefront of the battle for free speech. And indeed it used to be that way.
No longer. For the past year the Danish public prosecutor has been waging a lawfare offensive against outspoken critics of Islam and Muslim practices.

On December 3, 2010, Member of Parliament Jesper Langballe was convicted of "hate speech" – or as the judge in the lower court of Randers put it: "racial discrimination" – for having called attention to honour killings in Muslim families.

Next in line is Lars Hedegaard, President of the Danish Free Press Society and The International Free Press Society, who will stand trial in the lower court of Frederiksberg on January 24, 2011.

His crime has been to point to the great number of family rapes in areas dominated by Muslim culture. This well documented fact has brought him an indictment under the Danish penal code's "racism" clause: Article 266b.

Both MP Langballe and Lars Hedegaard have long ago emphasised that they did not intend to accuse all Muslims or even the majority of Muslims of such crimes. This has made no impression on the public prosecutor.

We fear that the public prosecutor intends to stifle open debate on Islam and Muslim culture. And we fear that he is doing so with the tacit approval of the governing parties, which first signalled their intention to remove the racism clause from the penal code but have recently recanted.

If the authorities succeed in silencing such critics as Jesper Langballe and Lars Hedegaard, who will dare speak out?

We must put a stop to these attempts to undermine free speech if we wish to preserve Denmark as a free country. And where Denmark – that former beacon of free speech – goes, the rest of the West may follow

You can help us.

Please send a few words to katrinewinkelholm@gmail.com in defence of Lars Hedegaard's freedom of expression. We will then publish them in The Free Press Magazine, Sappho.dk.

Please do what you can to spread the word about the trial of Lars Hedegaard.

Kinds regards
