Theology

In a wide-ranging essay called ‘Moderate Islam is a Prostration to the West,’ authorised or written by Osama bin Laden, true religion (i.e. Islam) is compared to ‘moderate’ Islam and belief systems found in the West. His essay is a reply to Saudi Arabian Muslim scholars outreach to the West.

The emphasis in one section by the SA scholars is exactly what people in the West want to hear: that there is ‘no compulsion in religion’ according to Islam. This Qur'anic verse is most often quoted to those who fear that Islam is a religion of domination. Quoting 2:256, the SA scholars say: ‘It is not permitted to coerce anyone regarding his religion.’ And conclude their point with: Thus Islam itself does not comport with coercion. (p. 40)

Osama bin Laden: ‘This is a distortion of truth with falsehood… There is no ambiguity there. The verse prohibits forcing people to change the faith of their hearts.’(p. 40) Apparently, even Islam/Allah recognises limits to its power.

He adds: ‘Why not clarify what “renounces idolatry [or Satan]” means to the West? Therefore, just as our religion contains no coercion, so too does it stresses renouncing idolatry, and faith in Allah, in the manner of Abraham – peace upon him. Thus what they make the first part of the verse [say] does not agree with its conclusion.’

‘Furthermore, a number of exegetes…have said that this verse has been abrogated by the Word of Allah… (Above verses). Thus the [matter of] abrogation is conveyed by those who think that the ban has to do with forcefully placing them under the authority of the religion. But those who believe that [the ban] revolves around the beliefs of the heart find no contradiction between the verses.’(p. 41) So, IF the ban is about the externals of Islam then it has been abrogated and coercion becomes acceptable. But if it is about the ‘heart’ there is no coercion or contradiction.

Raymond Ibrahim clarifies these two views: ‘Osama bin Laden is saying here that the issue of abrogation regarding verse 2:256 is controversial only in that some exegetes believe that forced conversion (as in the sited sword verses - above) actually is acceptable. However, says bin Laden, there is no contradiction in the mainstream interpretation that forced conversion is not acceptable while the imposition of Sharia law and dhimmi (i.e. second-class) status of the People of the Book is.’ In other words, while Muslim theologians differ as to whether verse 2:256 has been abrogated there is universal acceptance that Islam requires the imposition of Sharia law on all non-Muslims, by force if necessary. In the end, the debate is theoretical because control by Islam is, or is to become, the universal social reality and this is ‘more important.’ (p. 41) (E.g. Bukhari and Muslim above) The SA Scholars give the wrong impression to the West and are ‘like those who believe in part of the Book while rejecting the rest.’ (p. 42)

Hugh Fitzgerald: ‘But there is one more thing that should surely be offered as an objection when some fool comes along and utters credulously this "there is no compulsion in religion" and expects us to believe the Western understanding of it. That is the observable behavior of Muslims over 1350 years. What have Muslims done, when they have conquered, by force or otherwise, non-Muslim lands and peoples? They offer three possibilities: death, conversion, and, at least to those who can be classified as ahl al-kitab or "people of the book," permanent status as dhimmis, with a host of political, economic, and social disabilities which together added up to lives of humiliation, degradation, and physical insecurity, at times relieved -- but only at times -- by the occasional mollitude of a particular Muslim ruler. A slim reed on which to base one's happiness. And so, over time, many non-Muslims, in order to avoid this condition of degradation, humiliation, and physical insecurity, converted to Islam…

‘Of course there is "compulsion in religion" in the lands of Islam. The burdens placed on non-Muslims are simply too onerous to be ignored, and many, over the past 1350 years, when living under Muslim rule, have succumbed in order to avoid the dhimmi condition. And that succumbing, that yielding, demonstrates perfectly the "compulsion in religion" that Islam demands, whatever naive and unschooled interpretation of 2.256 any Infidel idiot chooses to give it. Muslims know better.’

This essay is a response to a long letter written by Islamic Scholars from Saudi Arabia (SA) to scholars from the West who wrote a letter called ‘What We’re Fighting For.’ The letter from SA, which Osama bin Laden believes to be a prostration, is called ‘How We Can Coexist’. OBL is not sympathetic with such a goal, ‘as if one of the foundations of our religion is how to coexist with infidels!!!’ (p. 23). The reason peaceful and harmonious coexistence is not possible is because the West, including the United Nations, do not understand the notions of ‘equality, freedom and justice’ as revealed by Mohammed. ‘No, they mean the despicable notions, which we see today in America and Europe, and which have made the people like cattle. Verily, Allah described them well:’ (read Qur'an 7:179 above) (p. 26)

‘For the declaration is completely flawed when it comes to the teachings of our religion – that is, faith in Allah alone, all the prophets, and the emulation of Mohammed; upholding the doctrine of Loyalty and Enmity; repudiating all enslavement save to Allah alone, and rejecting all idolatry and false worship; and [Offensive] Jihad in the path of Allah Most High. Indeed the essence of our problems with the West revolves around these principles.’ (p. 30)

Nb. The notion that the basis of the present conflict is anything other than primarily religious is without foundation. ‘Did [not] the Prophet, the Companions after him and the righteous forebears…wage jihad against the infidels, attacking them all over the earth, in order to place them under the suzerainty of Islam in great humility and submission? [Qur'an 9:29]… The sharia provides a true and just path, securing Muslims, and providing peace to the world. If Muslims wished it thus, all they need do is follow it. The West of a surety knows this path and battles us because of it.’ (p. 31)

‘For practically everything valued by the immoral West is condemned under Sharia law…the issues most prominent in the West revolve around secularism, homosexuality, sexuality, and atheism.’ (p. 37). The vast majority of the people in the West are infidels as revealed by the Qur'an (verses above and many others).

But the SA authors speak about Allah without knowledge when they speak of Man as a sacred creation and conclude: ‘Thus it is impermissible to transgress against him, no matter what his color, race or religion. [Qur'an 17:70]’ OBL says: ‘who told you that transgression against man is impermissible – if he is an infidel? What about Offensive Jihad? Allah Exalted, the Most High said: (Qur'an 9:14 and 9:5) ...’ (p. 38)

Principles of equality as found in the charters of the United Nations (or in treaties of the Organization of Non-Aligned States), which do not distinguish among people, neither by way of religion nor race nor sex are contrary to the teachings of Islam. For ‘Islam improves; it is not improved. For the Muslim, even if he was a slave, is a million times more superior than an infidel lord.’ Ref. “Do not marry infidel women until they believe…For a believing slave is much better than an idolater…Qur'an 2:221”’ (p. 38-9)

There is no common ground or shared understandings possible between those who are Muslims and non-Muslims. True religion does not ‘honour mankind’ as the SA letter says. Islam can ‘never possibly honour the Western man who rejects Allah Almighty. Indeed, He describes him as a cow; and He has cursed him and prepared the everlasting Fire for him.’ (p. 40)

What do Al-Qaeda and their millions of supporters and associates believe? They are Muslims and believe in Islam. To so-called moderate Muslims they say: ‘Indeed, your moderation will be in opposition to the command of the Prophet who said he had been sent in the final hours with the sword and had willed to battle mankind until they declare that there is no god but Allah.’ (p. 53)

‘As to the relationship between Muslims and infidels, this is summarized by the Most High’s Word: [read Qur'an 60:4 above]… So there is an enmity, evidenced by fierce hostility, and an internal hate from the heart. And this fierce hostility – that is, battle – ceases only if the infidel submits to the authority of Islam, or if his blood is forbidden from being shed [a dhimmi], or if the Muslims are [at that point in time] weak and incapable [of spreading Sharia law to the world]. But if the hate at any time extinguishes from the hearts, this is great apostasy; the one who does this [i.e. extinguishes the hate from his heart] will stand excuseless before Allah.

‘Allah Almighty’s Word to His Prophet recounts in summation the true relationship [read Qur'an 9:73 above]. Such, then is the basis and foundation of the relationship between the infidel and the Muslim. Battle, animosity, and hatred – directed from the Muslim to the infidel – is the foundation of our religion. And we consider this a justice and kindness to them. The West perceives fighting, enmity, and hatred all for the sake of the religion as unjust, hostile, and evil. But who’s understanding is right – our notions of justice and righteousness, or theirs?’ (p. 43)

Why the hatred? ‘Enmity and hate between us has been decreed from now until you renounce your infidelities, so we [must] start to disavow and hate you – ‘until you believe in Allah and Him alone’ – that is, until you exercise tawhid and worship Allah alone, partnerless, and break from whatever other idols and rivals you worship besides him.’ (p. 78).
