It takes a nation to protect the nation
I find that sometimes there is a word that expresses a concept very nicely or precisely, but that it has fallen out of use or is hard to remember. Those words generally come as part of a family, and each member of that family has a different role to play in that semantic area. So I'm starting this forum to record those, and show the connections between them. You'll see what I mean from the examples below. Please feel free to add your own, or to suggest amendments or corrections to mine.
This is the division of society into different groups that will fight for their own benefits (pork barrel politics), without giving a damn about anyone else, or the long term effects of their actions on the society and its prosperity and stability as a whole. Related words:
a Leveller would appear to be an egalitarian, but in reality may be a sectarian attacking any other group which is better off.
This is a counter argument given to disprove the given argument or point. It is rarely used, instead people talk about a 'counter' or 'argued against'. Related words:
It is said that Capitalism cannibalises itself, because in it's quest for higher profits and lower costs in the short term, Western nations let their manufacturing be relocated to China and other countries, thereby destroying their own economies in the long term.
But the process goes deeper than that. We can say that Western culture hollows itself out culturally, as it searches for ever more freedom of expression, and ever newer forms of expression, in the arts. Thus we now have visual art and music glorifying racist violence against white people. We have abusive scatological art targetting Christianity, but of course, nothing against Islam.
And it goes even deeper than that. You may have seen photos of a young demonstrator defecating on a US flag. Here the principle of freedom of expression has gone so far as to allow the degradation of the symbol of that very freedom of expression.
